Water Safety Ireland say Pool for West Wicklow would play important role in saving lives & raising Water Safety awareness!

Water Safety Ireland have made a strong submission to the Wicklow County Development Plan in support of the development of a swimming pool in West Wicklow.

Their submission, entitled Supporting the provision of a Swimming Pool in West Wicklow to enable Water safety and Lifesaving training to increase public awareness of water safety and reducing drowning in aquatic environment, highlights the important role that the development of a swimming pool in West Wicklow would play in promoting water safety awareness and save lives.

An average of 120 drownings occur in Ireland every year. The majority of all drownings, 62%,  occur at inland water sites such as rivers and lakes. Thirty children aged fourteen and under drowned in ten years. Drownings often happen quickly and silently with 80% of drownings occurring within the home county of the victim. The main pursuits that account for the highest number of drownings, are bathing, boating, walking and fishing.
At present there is not specialised inland water life saving training centre in Ireland. The development of a swimming pool in West Wicklow would present an opportunity for Water Safety Ireland to work with Wicklow County Council to develop such a training centre.

Water Safety Ireland- Kildare is voluntary body teaching water safety, swimming, resuscitation & lifesaving skills to Adults and Children in Kildare and West Wicklow.  They are the local representatives of Water Safety Ireland, the statutory body with assigned responsibility for the promotion of Water Safety in Ireland.

Water Safety Ireland’s main focus is on public awareness and education. Tragically, an average of 120 people drown each year in Ireland. Water Safety Ireland- Kildare feel that this is simply unacceptable considering that most fatalities are avoidable. They strive to reduce these fatalities by increasing water safety awareness and by changing attitudes and behaviours so that our aquatic environments can be enjoyed with confidence and safety.

Water safety Ireland vision is “Every person a swimmer – every person a lifesaver”
